Bavarian Philharmonic with Orion Weiss, Piano and Enoch zu Guttenberg, Music Director

Comprised of elite musicians from the Berlin and Munich Philharmonics and the Munich, Stuttgart, and Hamburg Operas, this ensemble is known for the amazing range of their repertoire. Pianist Orion Weiss, winner of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, recently performed with the Israel Phil conducted by Itzhak Perlman and made his European debut in Paris.

Program selections include:
Mozart, Overture to Don Giovanni
Beethoven, Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-Flat Major, Op. 73 "Emporer"

“Every so often, a talent comes along that is so natural, genuine, and exciting you can hardly believe your ears. Such was the case when…Weiss took the piano bench.”
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Birmingham Music Club Guild proudly sponsors the
Vienna Choir Boys

This famous boys’ choir, formed in 1498, performed exclusively for the imperial court of Vienna until 1918 when the public had the pleasure of hearing them perform for the first time. Today there are 100 choristers between the ages of 10 and 14, divided into four touring choirs. The choirs perform over 300 concerts per year in front of half a million fans.

“The Vienna Choir Boys is one of the oldest boys' choirs existing in the world. For nearly five hundred years they have been a symbol of Austria.”

This program has been made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Rachel Lee, violin

At the age of 19, violinist Rachel Lee is regarded as one of the most prodigious and promising talents on the concert stage. She has been featured on Ravinia’s Rising Star series and appeared with the most prestigious orchestras in the U.S. and Europe. She has also been featured along with Itzhak Perlman on a PBS documentary.

“Her sound is big and luscious enough to ride the orchestral crests comfortably, yet supple enough to make the singing paragraphs soar.” – The Chicago Tribune

Leif Ove Andsnes, piano

The New Yorker describes Andsnes as “one of the intimidating few who possess power and personality in equal measure.” This kind of critical recognition is nothing new for the Norwegian pianist who last fall opened the seasons of Carnegie Hall, the St. Louis Symphony, and the Cleveland Orchestra. Andsnes also hosts his own chamber music festival in Norway.

“Mr. Andsnes’s performance abounds in lyricism, rhapsodic volatility and, yes, that trademark clarity. His playing is scintillating, lithe, uncannily transparent.” – The New York Times
